Bear Trek Transylvania – The Carpathians, Europe’s most important wildlife stronghold.
If you love being amongst unspoilt wilderness, or yearn to be where wildlife thrives then the Carpathians in Transylvania offer you spectacular mountain scenery and nature in abundance. This is the most extraordinary wildlife habitat remaining in Europe and home to the largest population of the majestic brown bear. The Carpathian mountains retain their ancient conifer and beech forests, only subtly affected by man’s activities.
Your trek will take you into the heart of the Carpathians, pass the mysterious land of Dracula, where you will traverse across meandering plateaus, climb through endless forests reaching the limestone ridges and mountain summits with their spectacular viewpoints. Not just one, but two of the dramatic peaks of the Carpathians – the Bucegi Massif and the Piatra Craiului offering one of the most spectacular ridge walks in Europe. Rich in flora and fauna you will be exploring the habitat of the bear, wolf, lynx and the higher terrain of the chamois.
This thrilling challenge is designed so that you can both appreciate the lives and habitat of the bear and most importantly, aid the majestic residents of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary. Many of which were taken from their forest homes to live miserable lives entertaining humans, abused and in cramped conditions.
This is our chance to give back, as well as raise awareness of the conservation effort required for Europe’s most important wildlife stronghold. In return the trek finishes with a day meeting the bears with an expert guide to show us the work of the sanctuary, followed by dinner at the house and an evening spent warmed by a fire with a cosy night in a tepee amidst the Zarnesti Countryside.
All the money you raise will go direct to the Libearty Sanctuary and the continuing rescue of bears in need. Your sponsorship will also help fund the education of the Romanian school children and future generations, of the bear’s tremendous importance to Romania and to Europe.
You will be guided by the exceptional Clubul Montan Altitudine of Romania, the experts of the 7 Peaks of the Carpathians and affiliated with the Romanian Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. This is an opportunity to not only learn and discover nature, but also to ethically traverse through the wilderness, to push your limits under expert guidance and to reach your peak! as well as two of Romania’s most beautiful summits.
Should the flora be of particular interest, The Piatra Craiului National Park is a paradise for plant species with an identified 1170 species and subspecies and home to an impressive number of mountain orchids – 48 of the 53 species found in Romania. The Piatra Craiului National Park is of great importance to flora conservation, especially the endemic species of the Carpathians.
